Liberating bokdesign:preparing the boards

De buitenzijde van de borden werden behandeld met een gekleurde magnetische (zie ook later) verf.
The outside of the boards were treated with a colored magnetic (see later) paint.

De binnenzijde werden voorzien van een laag fineerhout.
The inner side were provided with a layer of veneer wood.

Liberating bookdesign: sewing

Voor de Prix de Reliure Louis Jou (voor meer info zie: http://louisjou.pagesperso-orange.fr/Prix%20de%20Reliure.pdf ) heb ik bovenstaand boek ingebonden. Het boek is nog te zien tot 30 september in het Museé Déparemental te Gap (FR).
Het uitgangspunt voor het binden van dit boek was:  "Hoe kan  ik een  boekbandontwerp maken waarin er een interactie met de lezer/eigenaar/jury kan ontstaan,". Het klassieke proces is dat de boekbinder het boek bindt en de eigenaar het aanschaft. In dit geval wou ik het boek inbinden maar de eigenaar/lezer/jury mee betrekken in het ontwerp. Dit heeft als gevolg dat het boek evenveel "bandontwerpen" zou moeten kunnen hebben als het lezers/eigenaars of juryleden heeft. Het bandontwerp komt hierdoor niet meer exclusief  toe aan de binder maar wordt hierdoor "bevrijd". Misschien is het op dit moment nogal warrig, maar zal met het vorderen van deze reeks ongetwijfeld  duidelijker worden.

For the Prix de Reliure Louis Jou I bound the book above (for more info see: http://louisjou.pagesperso-orange.fr/Prix%20de%20Reliure.pdf ). You can see the book  until September 30 at the Musée Deparemental of Gap (FR).

The starting point for the binding of this book was: "How can I make a designer bookbinding in which there may arise an interaction with the reader / owner / jury?". The traditional process is that the binder binds the book and the owner purchase it. In this case I wanted to bind the book but involve the owner / reader / jury in the design. This has as a result that the same book should be able to have as many "bookdesigns" as there are readers / owners or judges. Bookdesign is therefore no longer exclusive to the binder but will be "liberated". Perhaps it is at present rather confused, but it will undoubtedly be clearer when the bookwork is in progress.

Reliure de Lyon: "Veuves de maitres"

De laatste tijd zijn er mij erg enkele bijzondere geschriften onder ogen gekomen. Een ervan, een 19de eeuwse handleiding over boekbinden hoop ik beging 2014 in boekvorm te publiceren, maar daarover later meer. Een ander is het kleine boekje "Reglemens et statuts pour la communauté des Maitres Libraires, Relieurs, Doreurs de Livres sur tranche & sur cuir, de la Ville de Lyon" uit 1742. Terwijl de inhoud van het boekje zich vooral toelegt, op vormelijke zaken  (het organiseren van de feestdag van de patroonheilige, Saint Porte-Latine), is er achteraan het boekje, als een soort post scriptum een lijst bijgehouden van alle boekbinders in Lyon Deze stad is vooral bekend  (op boekbindersgebied) voor zijn Reliure de Lyon (voor een goede beschrijving zie: http://restaurationdelivres.com/fichiers/reliure_de_lyon.pdf ). Het zou zonde zijn om deze lijst niet te delen, vandaar bovenstaande foto's. 


Lately I have seen few special texts. One of them, a 19th century manual on bookbinding I will publish as a book  in 2014, but more on that later. Another is the little book "Reglemens et statuts pour la communauté des Maitres Libraires, Relieurs, the Doreurs & Livres sur tranche sur cuir, de la Ville de Lyon" from 1742. While the content of the book is mainly focused on formal matters (organizing the feast day of the patron saint, Saint Porte-Latine), there is  at the end of the book, as a sort of postscript  a list of all bookbinders in Lyon this city is known (in bookbindingmatters) for his Reliure de Lyon (for a good description see: http://restaurationdelivres.com/fichiers/reliure_de_lyon.pdf ). It would be a shame not to share this list, hence the pictures above.

Boekbinderij Toon Van Camp In-pression

In het januari/februari nummer van Boekenpost  (zie voor info: http://www.boekenpost.nl/ ) staat een artikeltje over Kris Landuyt, hoofd antquariaat van De Sleghte.  Ter gelegenheid van zijn prijs "Antiquaar van het jaar" heb ik  voor hem enkele werkjes mogen opknappen. Hierover staat er een klein, fijn verslagje in het tijdschrift.
