Met behulp van een kleurenkaart wordt de geschikte lederverf uitgezocht. Vervolgens wordt het leder gekleurd. Bij voorkeur wordt de lichtste tint gekozen zodat deze na het aanbrengen van het leder op kleur gebracht kan worden.
