Fabre & Fabre: Finally together

Tenslotte eindig ik deze "Fabre-reeks" met mijn aanvankelijke doelstelling: beide boekbanden samen. Met hun gelijkenissen maar ook met hun verschillen, hun eigenheid. Fabre's Book of Insects is ondertussen verzonden als mijn deelname aan de Xthe F.I.R.A. Internationaal Forum voor Kunstboekbanden dat in mei 2011 zal plaatsvinden. Finally in the Fabre-label my objective at the start. Both bookbindings together. With their similarities but also with their differences. Their individuality. Fabre: Finished binding

Afgewerkte boekband: Harmatan Oasis leder, met titel in gouddruk. Bij het openen van het boek verdwijnt de titel naar de binnenzijde en wordt dan zichtbaar aan de achterzijde van het boek. Blinddruk van florale motieven, dewelke donkerder worden naargelang ze dichter bij de rug liggen. Spiegels vervaardigd van schalmsel (zie "playing with paste). Partiële goudsnede (3 zijden).

Finished Bookbinding: Harmatan Oasis leather. titel in gold on the spine. When the book is opened, the titel disappeares and will be visible on the inside of the book. Blind impressions of floral motives (gettong darker on the spinearea). Paste-downs with leftovers from paring. Partially edge gilding.

Playing with paste

De spiegels zijn gemaakt van schalmsel (leve de Brockman schalmmachine!). Eenvoudig doch mooi. Het schamsel verzadigen met bloempap, aanbrengen op een Japans papier, even persen en laten drogen.

The past-downs are made of leftovers of paring leather. Saturate with paste, gluing on Japanes paper, short nip in the press and drying. And ready.

Shagreen & Galuchat

Volgende stap: aanbrengen van het Shagreen (of Galuchat) leder. Een zeer mooi leder dat aan de "haarzijde" bestaat uit pareltjes (te vergelijken met het emaïl van tanden). Door deze parels is het leder zeer moeilijk te schalmen (en te verwerken). In Fabre's Book wordt het ingelegd in het bord alvorens het te bekleden.

Next step: putting on the Shagreen (or Galuchat) leather. It's a very beautifull leather with pearls on the "grain"-side. Because of these paerls it is difficult to pare. In this book the Shagreen is glued in a reseced area before the covering.

Forwarding Fabre

De bindwijze voor het inbinden van Fabre's Book of Insects zal een "Single-Hinge"-binding zijn (Zie ook de label "Single Hinge binding" en "Single Hinge Binding: Lunel"). Deze bindwijze heeft enerzijds veel meer te bieden dan een traditionele bindwijze (ronding door de as, vloeiend openen van de borden, mooie opening van het boekblok). Anderzijds worden enkel "traditionele" materialen gebruikt voor de opbouw en afwerking (papier, karton, leder) zodat het als boek heel herkenbaar en handelbaar blijft. Boven is de onbeklede boekband afgebeeld.

The book will be bound as a Single Hinge Binding ( cfr. label: "Single Hinge binding" and "Single Hinge Binding: Lunel). This bindingtechnique has more advangates then the traditional bookstructures but by using only the usual materials (paper, board,leather) it is still very recognizable and manageable as a traditional book. Fabre & Fabre

De kleinzoon van J.H. Fabre is de hedendaagse performer, theater-maker & kunstenaar Jan Fabre (zie: http://www.troubleyn.be ). Van Jan Fabre heb ik me dit boekje "Fabre's Book of Insects, Volume I " aangeschaft. Tussen 2 haakjes: er is nooit een Volume II verschenen. Maar dit terzijde.
Doel is nu om dit boek als "tweeling-boek" in te binden. Hiermee bedoel ik dat ik het zal inbinden naar zijn eigenheid, maar dat in beide boeken, indien ze naast elkaar staan, de "familiale" band toch duidelijk is,.... we zullen zien.

The Grandson of J.H. Fabre is the performer, theatre-maker and artist Jan Fabre (cfr: http://www.troubleyn.be ). Jan Fabre is the author of "Fabre's Book of Insects, Volume I" Btw, Volume II is never published.
My target is now to bind the book as a "twin" of Les Ravageurs. To bind the Book of Insects with his own individuality, but if you see them standing together as clearly "family" from each other.... we will see.

Fabre

Dit boekje heb ik vorig jaar gekocht in Brussel. Het is een exemplaar van J.H. Fabre: "Les ravageurs" uit 1918. J.H. Fabre was een gerespecteerde schrijver/wetenschapper in de insectenkunde. Het boek is gebonden in schaapsleder met gevlekte kleuring en blinddrukken van allerlei insecten. De binding is waarschijnlijk gemaakt voor 1950 en door zijn uitvoering en platontwerp opmerkelijk.
Dit boekje is mijn inspiratiebron geworden voor mijn volgende project,.... Fabre's Book of insects

This book (that i bought a year agoo) is a copy of J.H. Fabre: "Les ravageurs" from 1918. J.H. Fabre was an well respected writer/scientist on entomology. The book is bound in sheepsleather with mottled handdying and stamps from several insects. This binding is from before 1950 and quit remarkable for the design.
This book has been my inspiration for my next project,..... Fabre's Book of insects.
