Edgard Claes: Künstlerische Bucheinbände in Polycarbonat

Kangoeroe leder. Handvergulden van de cirkels (ik heb ze niet geteld, maar het zijn er veel). Surfacegilding met tinten. Titelvergulden op de naaibanden.

Kangaroo leather. Handgilding of the circles (I have not counted them, but there are many). Surfacegilding with shades. Gold title on the sewing tapes.

Doublures van ruwe surface gilding met vlakken surface gilding die doorlopen vanuit de voorkant van de omslag.

Ik heb juist ontdekt dat dit mijn 100ste post is op mijn blogje. Dat betekent dat we a rato van 1 post per week toch al 100 weken bezig zijn in boekbindland. En voorlopig is er nog inspiratie genoeg om op dezelfde weg verder te gaan.

Bovenstaand boek is een Single Hinge Binding. Het boek is het zeer goede boek van Edgard Claes, over zijn innovatieve bindwijze. Het ontwerp van de  boekband is een reactie op vele hedendaags boekbanden waar subtiele aardse tinten en zachte pastelkleuren overheersen. Aan dit boek vind je 2 uitgesproken kleuren en veel, heel veel bladgoud, en weinig subtieliteit. Uiteraard mag een gouden snee niet ontbreken.

I just discovered that this is my 100th post on this blog. That means we have, a rate of 1 post a week, already spent 100 weeks in the world of bookbinding. And there is inspiration enough to continue on that course.

 The above book is a Single Hinge Binding. The book is the very good book by Edgard Claes about his innovative method of binding. The design of bookbinding is a reaction on the many contemporary bindings where earthy tones and soft pastel colors dominate. This book contains two distinct colors and lots, and lots of gold leaf. Of course there is also edge gilding.

Some other experiments: notice the two different ways of boardattachment. The next thing i will do is using this kind of binding on my book for the Prix de reliure Lunel 2010.

Enkele andere experimenten: hierbij test ik o.a. 2 verschillende manieren om de borden te bevestigen aan de "vlaggen". Na deze fase zal ik de bindwijze gebruiken bij mijn deelname aan de Prix de reliure Lunel 2010.

Single Hinge Binding: some experiments

I was very charmed of the single-hinge-binding made by Eri Funazaki. In The New Bookbinder 2009 she refers to the single-hinge-bindings made by James Brockman in the mid 1980's. In the TNB vol 6 there' s a little description of the bindings made by Brockman. Because Brockman used brass tubes and brass covers i did some structural experiments in order to make a single-hinge-binding made complete with traditional bookbindingmaterials like paper, leather, millboard,...

Ik was zeer gecharmeerd door de single-hinge-binding van Eri Funazaki. In The New Bookbinder 2009 staat deze afgebeeld en wordt er verwezen naar de single-hinge-bindings die James Brockman maakte in het midden van de jaren 80 van vorige eeuw. In the TNB vol 6 staat een korte beschrijving van deze bindingen. Omdat Brockman gebruik maakt van koperen buizen en platten (die aan elkaar gelast worden) besloot ik enkele experimenten te doen zodat de traditionele boekbindmaterialen gebruikt kunnen worden.
