De baas van alles: Blind tooling

Vervolgens worden er blinddruken op het omslagmateriaal aangebracht. Omdat dit bestaat uit verwerkt leder is het blinddrukken gelijkaardig zoals bij klassiek leder. De kat komt stilaan tot leven.

Then there is applied some blindtooling to the cover material. Because this material consists of remants of leather, blindtooling is similar as with classic leather. The cat is getting alive.

De baas van alles: Sewing

Na dat omslagmateriaal klaar is (zie vorige post) moet deze langdurig drogen. Dat geeft me tijd om het boekblok te naaien. Dit gebeurd op tweekleurige tegenkaternen. Zwarte beschermkaternen en zwart lederen scharnieren worden ook toegevoegd.

After that cover material is ready (see previous post), the material will have a prolonged drying. That gives me time to sew the book block. This happened on two-tone stubs. Black protective sheets and black leather hinges are also added.

De baas van alles: Leather for covering

Om het bekledingsmateriaal te maken gebruik ik lederresten, schamsel en splitsel. Dat alles wordt gelijmd op een stevig Japans papier. Tenslotte wordt het geheel grondig geschuurd. Het eindresultaat heeft een "organische" karakter.

To make the covering material I use leather scraps, paringleather and pieces of splitleather. All that is glued to a solid Japanese paper. Finally, the whole is thoroughly sanded. The end result has an "organic" character.

 Vervolgens experimenteerde ik ermee op resten leer. Hierdoor vond ik het meest passende medium qua felheid en soepelheid.

Then I experimented with them on leather remnants. So,  I did  found the most appropriate medium in terms of brightness and flexibility.

 

 

Voordat ik het boek verder inbond, moest ik eerst kunnen inschatten wat het effect was van het glow-up medium. Hiervoor kocht ik bij plaatselijke handelaren alle mogelijke varianten glow-up mediums op.

Before I bound the book, I had see what the effect of the glow-up medium would bring. For this I bought at local merchants all possible variations of glow-up mediums.

Bart Moeyaert: De baas van alles.

Een Belgische schrijver waarvan ik altijd al graag iets wou inbinden was Bart Moeyaert (zie http://www.bartmoeyaert.com/ ). Het evenement van  ARA Belgica  (zie  http://arabelgica.be/nl ): "Belgische schrijvers in boek en band" was hiervoor een goede aanleiding. Jammer genoeg (en dat geldt voor meer hedendaags Belgische schrijvers) zijn er van het werk van Bart Moeyaert geen "bibliofiele uitgave's " gemaakt. Ik ben dus maar opzoek gegaan naar een gewone handelseditie. Een uitgave die al snel in het oog springt is "De baas van alles". Dit boek is deels gedrukt in glow-up inkt, wat het mogelijk maakt om het boek in het donker te lezen. Handig voor kinderen, jong en oud die stiekem na slapenstijd nog een boek willen lezen. Het idee voor het bandontwerp volgde al snel: de boekband zou een toegevoegde dimensie moeten hebben wanneer het boek gelezen zou worden: in het donker. Dit zou mijn inzending worden.

A Belgian writer that I've really wanted to bind some work from was Bart Moeyaert (see http://www.bartmoeyaert.com/ ). The event  of ARA Belgica (see  http://arabelgica.be/nl ): "Belgian writers, a binding hommage" was a good reason for this. Unfortunately (and this applies to more contemporary  Belgian writers) there are no "bibliophile edition's" made ​​the work of Bart Moeyaert. So could I only went looking for a regular trade edition. One book that quickly catches the eye is "De baas van alles." This book is partly printed in glow-up ink, which makes it possible to read the book. into the dark. The idea for the band design soon followed: the binding should have an added dimension when read in the dark. This would be my entry.

Re-covering

 Nadien werd wat er restte van het oorspronkelijk leder terug  aangebracht, en het nieuwe kalfsleder bijgekleurd. Ook een nieuwe titel werd aangebracht. Door leder voor het bijkleuren af te dekken met stijfsel, werden kunstmatig slijtplekken gemaakt. De band bewaard op deze manier niet alleen zijn oorspronkelijke uitstraling maar is ook structureel gezond gemaakt.

Afterwards, was what remained of the original leather, was put back over the new leather. The new calf leather was dyed. Also a new title was applied. Artificially scuffs where  made​ by appliying starch paste  before dyeing the leather.​. The book kept in this way not only its original appearance but is also made structurally sound.

 

 

Een doorgedreven vorm van restauratie is soms aangewezen. Bij bovenstaande band was het leder in zo'n slechte staat en waren er zoveel ontbrekende stukken, dat een voorzichtige restauratie weinig zoden aan de dijk zou brengen. Er werd in dit geval geopteerd om de gehele omslag (of wat er nog van overbleef ) volledig te vervangen. Er werden nieuwe borden, perkamenten rugversterking, kapitaalbanden en  nieuw kalfsleder aangebracht.

 

A thorough form of restoration is sometimes appropriate. The leather of the above bookwas in such poor condition and there were so many missing pieces of the leather that the classical rebacking was not a sound solution. In this case it was to replace fully the whole cover (or what's left of it was). There were applied new boards, parchments reinforcements, headbands and new calfskin.

Benjamin Elbel: Dos rapporté

Afhankelijk van de lichtinval wordt het onderliggende decor meer of minder zichtbaar.

In het begin van het jaar organiseerde ik in Antwerpen mee een workshop Dos Rapporté gegeven door Benjamin Elbel.  Benjamin is een Franse boekbinder die werkzaam is in Londen. Zijn werk is een frisse wind in het boekbindlandschap en stelt traditionele structuren in vraag. Voor meer info over Benjamin Elbel kan je terecht op : http://www.behance.net/boundbyben .
