The book is been bound in the traditional way ("passé carton"). Except the boards: they are split but temporary attached (some little dots of PVA,....) and then covered with leather. When the leather is dry, there are split again, the leather holds the boards attached. This is an easy way the finish the turn-overs and glue the splitboards exactly back in place.
The leather on the spine is crease to form a "back-bone" and have some folds.
In the recessed aria there are some leather scraps visible:
On the rearcover you can find: crocodile, snake, frog, salmon, shark and eel. There is also a piece of "mother of pearl".
On the frontcover there is: duck, chicken, ostrich leg and skin, cow-stomach, kangaroo, beaver and deer. And also a piece of "mother of pearl"
A design with Darwin in my mind,........
Het boek is gebonden als een traditionele "Franse band". De borden zijn echter gesplitst. De buitenste laag wordt voorlopig aangebracht met enkele stipjes PVA. Het bord wordt geschuurd, en bekleed met leder. Daarna wordt de buitenste laag terug losgemaakt (het bord hangt vast d.m.v. het leder), de inslagen afgewerkt,... Dit is een gemakkelijke manier om de borden exact terug te plaatsen en definitief te verlijmen.
Het leder van de rug is bewerkt zodat op de rug een "ruggengraat" zichtbaar is alsook enkele plooien.
In het verzonken gedeelte bevinden zich (met de evolutietheorie in de gedachten):
Op het achterplat: parelmoer: vissen (zalm, haai en paling) en reptielen (slang, krokodil, kikker)
Op het voorplat: vogels (struisvogel, kip, eend) en zoogdieren (koe(maag), kangoeroe,bever en hert).
